When viewed straight down, a fish in a pond appears nearer than it is. This is due to the bending of light as it travels from water to air, which causes the fish to appear closer to the surface than it is. This phenomenon is called refraction. As a result, the fish's actual position in the water is farther below than it appears to be when viewed from above.
