The surge in nationalism in many African countries, particularly in West Africa, was fueled by oppressive colonial experiences and the ideology and activities of Pan-Africanism. Pan-Africanism promoted solidarity among Africans and advocated for the liberation of African nations from colonial rule. It emphasised the unity of all people of African descent, which played a significant role in galvanizing nationalist movements across the continent. Pan-African leaders, such as Kwame Nkrumah and W.E.B. Du Bois, inspired many to seek independence and resist colonial domination.
