Separation of Powers was first formulated by Baron de Montesquieu. In his work "The Spirit of the Laws" (1748), Montesquieu articulated the idea that the best way to prevent tyranny and protect liberty was to divide government powers into separate branches: the legislative, the executive and the judicial. This concept has significantly influenced modern democratic systems.
