Impurities formed during the laboratory preparation of chlorine gas, particularly water vapor, can be removed by passing the gas through concentrated sulfuric acid (H\(_2\)SO\(_4\)). H\(_2\)SO\(_4\) acts as a drying agent, absorbing water and leaving behind a more pure chlorine gas.
