JAMB - Chemistry (2005 - No. 10)

What will happen if an aluminium spoon is used to stir a solution of iron (II) trioxonitrates (V)?
The spoon will be oxidized while the iron (II) ions will be reduced to the metal
The spoon will increase in size
The spoon will be reduced while the iron (II) ions will be oxidized
The spoon will be reduced

Explicaţie

When an aluminum spoon reacts with a solution of iron(II) trioxonitrate(V) (Fe(NO3)2), aluminum, being more reactive than iron, displaces iron from its compound, resulting in the formation of solid iron and aluminum nitrate solution.

The chemical reaction can be represented as: 2Al(s) + 3Fe(NO\(_3\))\(_2\)(aq) → 3Fe(s) + 2Al(NO\(_3\))\(_3\)(aq)
