WAEC - Government (2017 - No. 39)

Colonial administration in West Africa was a result of
a need for a new environment
the desire to underdevelop West Africa
a need for raw materials and markets
the urge to introduce western education

Explanation

The purpose of colonisation was to serve as a source of inexpensive labour and natural resources. Most colonists had faced difficult lives in Britain, Ireland, Scotland or Germany. They came to Africa to escape poverty, warfare, political turmoil, famine and disease. They believed colonial life offered new opportunities.
