On February 3, 1976, under the regime of Major General Murtala Mohammed and the recommendation of the Justice Ayo Irikefe Panel, seven additional states were added to the original 12 states (which was created by Lt. Colonel Yakubu Gowon in 1967) and the total became 19 states.
