Explanation

The Council of State in Nigeria is composed of key figures, including all the state governors, the President (as Chairman), the Vice President (as Deputy Chairman), all former Presidents and Heads of State, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Attorney General of the Federation. 

The Council of State in Nigeria serves as an advisory body to the President. Its duties include:

  1. Advising the President on matters such as:

    • National population census and the maintenance of related records.

    • The exercise of the prerogative of mercy.

    • Awarding national honours.

    • Appointments to key bodies like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Judicial Council (NJC), and the National Population Commission (NPC).

  2. Providing counsel on maintaining public order within the federation or any part of it.

  3. Offering advice on other matters as directed by the President.
