King Josiah of Judah died during a battle at Megiddo when he attempted to intercept Pharaoh Neco of Egypt, who was passing through Judah on his way to assist the Assyrians against the Babylonians. This event is recorded in:

• 2 Kings 23:29 (RSV) –
  "In his days Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates. King Josiah went to meet him; and Pharaoh Neco slew him at Megiddo, as soon as he saw him."

• 2 Chronicles 35:20–24 (RSV) also gives more detail, showing Josiah disguising himself and being fatally wounded in battle.
