When Jesus told the would-be disciple who wanted to bury his father to leave the dead to bury their own dead , he meant that
it was customary for the Jewish family to bury the dead
the spirittually dead should be left to bury the physically dead
the man's father had not died
there was an assurance of resurrection for all
discipleship entailed complete detachment from the family

Explanation

In Luke 9:59-60, when Jesus told the would-be disciple, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God," He was emphasising the urgency and priority of following Him"The dead" in the first instance refers to the spiritually dead (those not following Christ). "Their own dead" refers to those who are physically dead. Jesus was urging the man to focus on the spiritual call rather than worldly obligations.
