Benedict's reagent is used to test for the presence of reducing sugars in a sample, like glucose, by changing colour from blue to green, yellow, orange, or red depending on the concentration of the sugar present; a positive result indicates the presence of a reducing sugar and is shown by a brick-red precipitate forming. Fructose, glucose and galactose are reducing sugar but sucrose is a non-reducing sugar.
