WAEC - Biology (1995 - No. 45)
Prevention of erosion could best be carried out by
crop rotation and mulching
contouring of slopping ground and afforestation
grazing terracing and shifting cultivation
strip cropping and poaching
bush fallowing and crop rotation.
Explanation
Contouring of slopping ground and afforestation is the best method of erosion prevention because during afforestation, trees are planted and these roots of these trees are deeper compared crop roots as seen in crop rotation, have roots and branches that help in binding soil particles together reducing erosion. Besides, afforestation provides and contouring of slopping ground provide long term solution to erosion as trees can live for decades or even centuries.
