Mathematics for IGCSE & O level - Coordinate Geometry (Section 2 - No. 17)
If the midpoint of a line segment AB is (3, 5) and point A is (1, 2), what are the coordinates of point B?
(2, 3)
(5, 8)
(4, 10)
(2, 7)
Explanation
If M=(3,5), and A = (1,2), and B=(x,y). Then (3,5) = ((1+x)/2 , (2+y)/2), which makes x=5 and y=8 or B(5,8). Alternative: x coord increases by 2 to go from A to M. So, A to B will be an increase of 4 (1+4=5) , same for y coord which increases by 3 to go from A to M. so A to B = 2+6 = 8.
