JEE Advance - Physics (2009 - Paper 1 Offline - No. 3)

The figure shows certain wire segments joined together to form a coplanar loop. The loop is placed in a perpendicular magnetic field in the direction going into the plane of the figure. The magnitude of the field increases with time. $$I_1$$ and $$I_2$$ are the currents in the segments ab and cd. Then,

IIT-JEE 2009 Paper 1 Offline Physics - Electromagnetic Induction Question 4 English

$$I_1 > I_2$$
$$I_1 < I_2$$
$$I_1$$ is in the direction ba and $$I_2$$ is in the direction cd.
$$I_1$$ is in the direction ab and $$I_2$$ is in the direction dc.

Explanation

Since $$\phi_B$$ increases in the downward direction, according to Lenz's law, the induced current flows in such a manner to create an upward going flux, that is, a flux in anticlockwise direction. Since the outer loop has a bigger enclosed area than inner loop, the induced current flow is as follows:

$$\bullet$$ Induced current, $$I_2$$: Flows from d to c

$$\bullet$$ Induced current, $$I_1$$: Flows from a to b
