JEE Advance - Chemistry (2008 - Paper 1 Offline - No. 5)

Native silver metal forms a water soluble complex with a dilute aqueous solution of NaCN in the presence of:
nitrogen
oxygen
carbon dioxide
argon

Explanation

Reaction involving leaching of silver ores is reversible add, so to get the maximum yield of the product the reaction is carried out in presence of oxygen. Also, oxygen oxidises silver which then produces soluble complex with CN$$^-$$ ions.

4Ag + 8NaCN + 2H$$_2$$O + O$$_2$$ $$\to$$ 4Na[Ag(CN)$$_2$$] + 4NaOH
