JEE MAIN - Physics (2019 - 12th April Evening Slot - No. 21)
Figure shows a DC voltage regulator circuit, with a Zener diode of breakdown voltage = 6V. If the
unregulated input voltage varies between 10 V to 16 V, then what is maximum Zener current?

3.5 mA
1.5 mA
2.5 mA
7.5 mA
Explanation
$${I_L} = {{{V_Z}} \over {{R_L}}}$$
= $${{6\,V} \over {4\,k\Omega }}$$ = 1.5 mA
Let input voltage = V
$$ \therefore $$ $${{V - {V_Z}} \over {{R_S}}} = {I_s}$$
Here maximum input voltage = 16 V
$$ \therefore $$ $${{16 - 6} \over {2\,k\Omega }} = {I_s}$$
$$ \Rightarrow $$ IS = 5 mA
$$ \therefore $$ IZ = IS - IL = 5 - 1.5 = 3.5 mA
