JEE MAIN - Mathematics (2022 - 29th June Morning Shift - No. 11)

A wire of length 22 m is to be cut into two pieces. One of the pieces is to be made into a square and the other into an equilateral triangle. Then, the length of the side of the equilateral triangle, so that the combined area of the square and the equilateral triangle is minimum, is :
$${{22} \over {9 + 4\sqrt 3 }}$$
$${{66} \over {9 + 4\sqrt 3 }}$$
$${{22} \over {4 + 9\sqrt 3 }}$$
$${{66} \over {4 + 9\sqrt 3 }}$$

Explanation

JEE Main 2022 (Online) 29th June Morning Shift Mathematics - Application of Derivatives Question 84 English Explanation

$$4a + 3b = 22$$

Total area $$ = A = {a^2} + {{\sqrt 3 } \over 4}{b^2}$$

$$A = {\left( {{{22 - 3b} \over 4}} \right)^2} + {{\sqrt 3 } \over 4}{b^2}$$

$${{dA} \over {dB}} = 2\left( {{{22 - 3b} \over 4}} \right)\left( {{{ - 3} \over 4}} \right) + {{\sqrt 3 } \over 4}\,.\,2b = 0$$

$$ \Rightarrow {{\sqrt {3b} } \over 2} = {3 \over 8}(22 - 3b)$$

$$ \Rightarrow 4\sqrt 3 b = 66 - 9b$$

$$ \therefore b = {{66} \over {9 + 4\sqrt 3 }}$$
