JEE MAIN - Chemistry (2023 - 30th January Evening Shift - No. 2)
Given below are two statements: One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R.
Assertion A:
can be easily reduced using $\mathrm{Zn}-\mathrm{Hg} / \mathrm{HCl}$ to _30th_January_Evening_Shift_en_2_2.png)
Reason $\mathrm{R}: \mathrm{Zn}-\mathrm{Hg} / \mathrm{HCl}$ is used to reduce carbonyl group to $-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-$ group.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Assertion A:

Reason $\mathrm{R}: \mathrm{Zn}-\mathrm{Hg} / \mathrm{HCl}$ is used to reduce carbonyl group to $-\mathrm{CH}_{2}-$ group.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:
${ \text {Both } A \text { and }} \mathrm{R}$ are true and $\mathrm{R}$ is the correct explanation of $\mathrm{A}$
$\mathrm{A}$ is false but $\mathrm{R}$ is true
A is true but $\mathrm{R}$ is false
Both $\mathrm{A}$ and $\mathrm{R}$ are true but $\mathrm{R}$ is not the correct explanation of $\mathrm{A}$
Explanation
The carbonyl group of aldehyde or ketone gets reduced to alkane on treatment with Zn-Hg with HCl and the reaction is named as Clemmensen reduction.
But for hydroxyaldehyde or hydroxyketone, the alcoholic group gets converted to alkyl halide while carbonyl group gets reduced to alkane.
