JEE MAIN - Chemistry (2023 - 29th January Morning Shift - No. 4)
Identify the correct order for the given property for following compounds.
Choose the correct answer from the option given below :
(A), (B) and (E) only
(A), (C) and (D) only
(A), (C) and (E) only
(B), (C) and (D) only
Explanation
Boiling point of alkyl halide increases with
increase in size, mass of halogen atom and size of
alkyl group.
Boiling point of isomeric alkyl halide decreases with increase in branching. But we know boiling point of alkyl halide increases with increase in mass of halogen atom and here halogen atom Br has atomic mass 80 which is very high, so by adding each 'Br' atom molecular weight of alkyl halide increases very much and increases boiling point. Here decrease of boiling point due to branching get's overcome by high atomic mass of Br.
Density increases with increase in atomic mass of halogen atom. As Density = $${{Mass} \over {Volume}}$$
