JEE MAIN - Chemistry (2022 - 27th July Morning Shift - No. 2)
Given below are two statements.
Statement I: $$\mathrm{O}_{2}, \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$$, and $$\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$$ are weakly attracted by magnetic field and are magnetized in the same direction as magnetic field.
Statement II: $$\mathrm{NaCl}$$ and $$\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$$ are weakly magnetized in opposite direction to magnetic field.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
Explanation
$\mathrm{O}_{2}, \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$ and $\mathrm{Fe}^{3+}$ have 2,1 and 5 unpaired electrons respectively, so these are the paramagnetic species. Hence, they are attracted by magnetic field.
$\mathrm{NaCl}$ and $\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{O}$ are the diamagnetic species so they are repelled by the magnetic field.
