Explanation

JEE Main 2018 (Offline) Chemistry - Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers Question 152 English Explanation 1

First in presence of OH$$-$$ ion phenol will donate H+ ion and create phenoxide ion. Then this ion will react with methyl chloroformate and carbon joined with Cl and O will be slightly positive charge due to pulling of electron towards O and Cl atom. This positive charge C atom will join with negative charged O ion in phenoxide ion and create product A.

JEE Main 2018 (Offline) Chemistry - Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers Question 152 English Explanation 2
