Using the diagram above, calculate the relative density of x, if the density of methanol is 800kgm\(^{-3}\)
0.8
0.5
1.5
2.5
Explanation
density of methanol = 800kgm\(^{-3}\) → 0.8gcm\(^{-3}\)
At equilibrium, the density of methanol = the density of liquid x
\(\rho\) x h x g = \(\rho\)\(_x\) x h\(_x\) x g
0.8 x 7.1 = \(\rho\)\(_x\) x 14.2
\(\rho\)\(_x\) = \(\frac{0.8\times7.1}{14.2}\) = 0.4gcm\(^{-3}\)
\(\therefore\), the relative density of liquid x = 0.4
Relative density of X = \(\frac{\text{density of liquid x}}{\text{density of methanol}}\) = \(\frac{0.4}{0.8}\) = 0.5
