As per Faraday's laws of electromagnetic induction, an e.m.f is induced in a conductor whenever
lies parallel to the magnetic flux
lies in a magnetic field
lies out side but close to a magnetic field
cuts magnetic flux

Explanation

Cuts magnetic flux:  According to Faraday's law, when a conductor cuts through magnetic field lines (flux), an e.m.f is induced.
