JAMB - Mathematics (2009 - No. 42)

What is the mean deviation of x, 2x, x+1 and 3x. If their mean is 2?
0.5
1.0
1.5
2.0

Explanation

x ∓x x-\(\overline{X}\) /x-\(\overline{X}\)/
x 1 -1 1
2x 2 0 0
x+1 2 0 0
3x 3 1 1
      āˆ‘/x-\(\overline{X}\)/ = 2

Mean(\(\overline{X}\)) = \(\frac{ x + 2x + x + 1 + 3x}{4}\) = 2

2 = \(\frac{7x + 1}{4}\)

8 = 7x + 1

7x = 8 - 1 = 7

x = \(\frac{7}{7}\) = 1

Mean deviation = \(\frac{āˆ‘(| x - \overline{X}|)}{n}\)

M.D = \(\frac{2}{4}\) = \(\frac{1}{2}\) = 0.5
