A round character is a complex and multifaceted character that possesses a depth of personality and contradictory traits. Such a character also undergoes internal development throughout a story. They are designed to feel like real people.

In contrast, a flat character is two-dimensional and is defined by a single trait or function. Such a character remains unchanged (static) throughout the narrative.
