In Buchi Emecheta's Second Class Citizen, Adah admires and becomes obsessed with the sleek woman at the hospital because the woman has a caring and loving husband. This contrasts sharply with Adah's own troubled married to Francis. The sleek woman is "showered with presents of flowers, funny dolls that made mad music, beautiful boxes... that contained all sorts of things" (pg. 124) and it never occurs to Adah that "such things could be real" (p. 125).
