Democracy is literally defined as "rule of the people" (from the Greek demos meaning people and kratos meaning power). In a democratic system, the citizens of the country are the only source of power.

People exercise this power by electing representatives to govern on their behalf. This is often summarized by the phrase "government of the people, by the people, and for the people".
