The process by which citizens get involved in the political activities and decision-making of their country is known as political participation. It describes a broad range of voluntary activities intended to influence public policy and the selection of political leaders. While voting is the most frequent form, political participation also includes working on campaigns, joining political parties, contacting public officials, protesting and petitioning.

It is considered vital for a healthy democracy because it ensures the government hears the voices of its citizens and remains accountable to them.
