JAMB - Government (2025 - No. 102)

Before the 1976 reforms, local government administration in Nigeria was characterised by
high centralisation
democratic elections
standardised structures
autonomy in decision making

Explanation

Before 1976, local governments in Nigeria were not uniform and lacked power. They were heavily controlled by the state (regional) governments and traditional authorities. This high centralisation at the state level meant that local councils had very little independence or functional capacity.
