The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was created on the 28th of May, 1975 in Lagos, Nigeria under the leadership of General Yakubu Gowon of Nigeria and President Eyedama of Togo. 

The organisation is headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria whereas its financial headquarters is in Lome, Togo.
