The major reason for the adoption of the Federal system of Government was to ensure unity despite the cultural, religious and ethnic diversity prevalent in Nigeria. Each state of the Federation gets to create and implement laws and policies that are specific to the region while still reporting to the central government. This helps to maintain unity despite the diversity in the country.
