The National Universities Commission (NUC) was established earlier, in 1962, by the Federal Government of Nigeria to oversee the development of higher education in the country. The 1979 Constitution of Nigeria established the Police Service Commission, the Federal Electoral Commission (now known as the Independent National Electoral Commission or INEC), and the National Population Commission.
