The British government revoked the charter of the Royal Niger Company on January 1, 1900, taking over the administration of Nigeria. This marked the beginning of formal British colonial rule in the region. The territories previously controlled by the company were reorganized into the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria and the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria.
