The military intervention in Nigerian politics in 1966 was triggered by factors such as electoral fraud, ethnic tensions, political instability and lawlessness. However, the willingness of politicians to relinquish power was not one of the causes—in fact, the opposite was true. Politicians were generally unwilling to relinquish power, which led to election rigging, corruption and political violence.
