JAMB - Government (1990 - No. 52)
The two nationalist leaders who led the tour of Northern Nigeria in 1946 to campaign against the Richards Constitution were
Ahmadu Bello and Abubakar Tawafa Balewa
Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo
Ahmadu Bello and Samuel Ladoke Akintola
Herbert Macaulay and Nnamdi Azikiwe
Explanation
In 1946, Herbert Macaulay and Nnamdi Azikiwe led a tour of Northern Nigeria to campaign against the Richards Constitution. They opposed the constitution because it was drafted without proper consultation with Nigerians and maintained colonial control over key aspects of governance. The following were some of the things they campaigned against:
1. The elective principle was restricted only to Lagos and Calabar as it was with the Clifford Constitution of 1922.
2. The regional assemblies were advisory and consultative bodies only.
3. That the governor should not have reserve power to veto or certify bills.
4. That the chiefs and their nominees into the legislative council were not representatives of the people.
