The Independence Constitution of 1960 was a result of negotiations between Nigerian leaders and the British government. Leading Nigerian politicians, including those from different regions, participated in constitutional conferences in London (1957 and 1958) to determine the structure of the government after independence. The constitution granted Nigeria full self-government within the Commonwealth, with a parliamentary system and a Governor-General representing the British monarch.
