This event is recorded in Joshua 24. Near the end of his life, Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel at Shechem for a final covenant renewal. Shechem was a deeply symbolic place for the Israelites, as it was where God first promised the land to Abraham.

Joshua reviewed God's faithfulness to the nation and famously challenged the people to choose whom they would serve, stating, "But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15).
