According to Jeremiah, the people of Israel were sent into exile primarily because of their unfaithfulness to God and persistent disobedience. They broke their covenant with God by worshipping idols, committing injustices and refusing to repent despite multiple warnings from prophets (Jeremiah 2:13, 3:6-10, 25:8-11, RSV).
