In 2 Corinthians 8:4-5 (RSV), Paul commended the churches in Macedonia for their generosity:

"Begging us earnestly for the favour of taking part in the relief of the saints..."

"And this, not as we expected, but first they gave themselves to the Lord and to us by the will of God."

The "saints" referred to here are the believers in Jerusalem who were in need due to poverty. The Macedonian churches, despite their own poverty, gave generously to support the saints in Jerusalem.
