Paul admonishes the Corinthians to forgive the penitent offender so that
the offender may have peace of mind
it may be a lesson to other believers
forgiveness would demonstrate Christian love
the offender may not be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow
Explanation
Paul addresses the issue of forgiveness in 2 Corinthians 2:7 (RSV):
"so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow."
Paul encourages the Corinthians to forgive a repentant sinner so that he does not fall into deep despair or excessive grief. Instead of condemning the offender further, they should offer comfort and restoration.
