Although David refused to kill Saul because he was the LORD'S anointed, he still believed that
Saul would be killed by the Philistines
Saul would one day repent
the LORD would eventually smite Saul
Saul's soldiers would cause him to die in battle
Explanation
David refused to kill Saul because he respected him as the LORD’s anointed. However, he believed that Saul’s downfall would come by God’s judgment, not by his own hand.
In 1 Samuel 26:10 (RSV), David said:
"As the Lord lives, the Lord will smite him; or his day shall come to die, or he shall go down into battle and perish."
This shows that David trusted God to handle Saul’s fate in His own way—whether by natural death, divine intervention, or battle.
