King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon appointed Gedaliah as the governor of Judea after the Babylonians captured Jerusalem. This event is recorded in 2 Kings 25:22-24 and Jeremiah 40:5-6. Gedaliah was tasked with overseeing the remaining Jewish population in the region after the Babylonian conquest.
