The IUPAC nomenclature of compound CH\(_3\)CH\(_2\)COOCH\(_2\)CH\(_3\) is
propyl ethanoate
ethyl butanoate
ethyl propanoate
methyl butanoate
Explanation
While trying to name the compound CH\(_3\)CH\(_2\)COOCH\(_2\)CH\(_3\) , we must realize that this ester or alkanoate was derived from two reactants; alkanol and alkanoic acid. Therefore, we'll try to split the compound into two for easier naming.
CH\(_3\)CH\(_2\)COO - CH\(_2\)CH\(_3\).
Secondly, start the naming from the right hand side i.e CH\(_2\)CH\(_3\), which is ethyl
Thirdly, name the compound from the left hand side i.e CH\(_3\)CH\(_2\)COO,which is propanoate (because there are 3 carbon atoms and the functional group RCOO-).
Finally, join the two names together i.e ethyl propanoate.
