\(MnO_2 + 2CI^- + 4H^+ → Mn^{2+} + CI_2 + 2H_2O\).
The changes in oxidation numbers when the manganese, chloride, and hydrogen ions react according to the above equation are respectively?
The changes in oxidation numbers when the manganese, chloride, and hydrogen ions react according to the above equation are respectively?
2, 2, 4
-1, -2, 4
-2, 1, 0
2, 4, 0
Explanation
\(MnO_2 + 2CI^- + 4H^+ → Mn^{2+} + CI_2 + 2H_2O\). i.e \(Mn^+ O^{2-} + 2Cl^- + 4H^+\) → \(Mn^{2+} + Cl^0_2 + 2H^+ O^{2-}\)
Mn⇒2 - 4 = -2; Cl ⇒ 0 - 1 = -1; H ⇒ 1-1 = 0.
therefore, the change in the oxidation state of Mn, Cl, and H = -2, -1, and 0.
