JAMB - Chemistry (1979 - No. 42)
A gas occupies a volume of 30.0 dm\(^3\) at S.T.P. What volume would it occupy at 91\(^0\)C and 380 mm Hg?
20. 0dm3
40.0dm3
60. 0dm3
80. 0dm3
100. 0dm3
Explanation
Given:
V\(_1\) = 30.0 dm\(^3\) , T\(_1\) = 273K , P\(_1\) = 760 mmHg (At S.T. P)
V\(_2\) = ? , T\(_2\) = 91 + 273= 364K , P\(_2\) = 380 mmHg
Using \(\frac{{P_1}{V_1}}{T_1}\) = \(\frac{{P_2}{V_2}}{T_2}\)
V\(_2\) = \(\frac{{P_1}{V_1}{T_2}}{{P_2}{T_1}}\)
= \(\frac{{760}\times{30}\times{364}}{{380}\times{273}}\)
= 80.0 dm\(^3\)
