A climax community is a stable, mature ecosystem representing the final stage of ecological succession, characterized by high biodiversity, a balance of species adapted to local conditions, and a relatively constant species composition over time. 

Ecological succession involves changes in species composition within a community over time, and the two main types are primary and secondary succession, with primary succession occurring in newly formed or exposed areas and secondary succession occurring in areas previously inhabited but disturbed.
