JAMB - Biology (1997 - No. 16)

A food substance was treated with a few drops of Sudan III solution and a red coloration was obtained. The food contained
protein
starch
fat
mineral salt

Explanation

To test for fats using Sudan III solution, add a few drops of the sample to a test tube, then add Sudan III reagent. If lipids are present, the solution will turn red as the dye binds to the lipids. Sudan III is a fat-soluble dye that readily binds to lipids (fats and oils).
