JAMB - Chemistry (2000 - No. 21)

HCl(aq) + H\(_2\)O(l) → H\(_3\)O+(aq) + Cl\(^-\)(aq)
In the reaction above, Cl\(^-\)(aq) is the

base

Explicação

In water, HCl produces hydrogen ions (H+) because it is an acid. When HCl donates a proton, the negatively charged chloride ion (Cl-) is left behind. However, the chloride ion (Cl-) is the conjugate base of hydrochloric acid (HCl) because it is left over after HCl donates a proton to water.
