The desire for constitutional development in British West African colonies stemmed primarily from the growing agitation of the people for political independence. As the people became more aware of their rights and the need for self-governance, they increasingly demanded reforms and constitutional changes that would lead to greater autonomy and eventual independence from British colonial rule. This movement was driven by educated elites, nationalists, and other groups pushing for political and social reforms.
