The term 'assimilation' means the absorption of new ideas into an existing cognitive structure.It is the imposition of a minority group the customs and attitudes of the dominant culture. The system does not give regards to the existing culture of the people. When the system later failed to hold in the French colonial territory, they switched to the 'Policy of Association'; a systems that gives regards to the life and culture of the people.
